Swine flu, the end of the world?

Today I got into a discussion with a group of people about the pros and cons of the swine flu vaccine. Somehow, we pointed out that the Mayan people have predicted December 2012 to be the end of world. What if swine flu actually is the pandemic that will be the end of the world? I don’t think so, though, but you never know. I merely think the Mayan people predicted 2012 to be the end of the world because they couldn’t see further. Therefore, I think 2012 won’t be the end of the world, but the beginning of a new era, of a new something. Maybe an evolution or something. But the end of the world? I’m skeptic.

Anyways, back to the topic. I got the offer to get a vaccine on Monday. I’m still unsure if I’ll go. Before I got the calling letter, I was sure I didn’t want to get a vaccine. Now, I’m actually hestitating and trying to balance between the pros and cons.  I just feel it’s a pandemic that’s not such a big deal. Yet, at the same time, I know I shouldn’t just stand here and do nothing. However, I think media has purposedly given us a wrong picture of how dangerous the H1N1 virus is. I just see cons with getting a vaccine. I’m sure there are pros, though, but as of now, I have a hard time seeing what it is.

So far, there are very few people who have died of Swine Flu in Sweden and it was because they belonged to the risk groups. Many others have been sick in swine flu, but got well again. On the other side, 1000 people die by regular influenza every year. Swine flu may be a different virus, but all the same, it is not so dangerous yet. It’s still new.

I will have to continue reflecting over whether I should get the vaccine or not until Monday. It’s more likely I will not, if not anyone will have managed to persuade me to get the vaccine.
